After 3 years, we finally made it through long distance and my mom cried
Just wanted to share a little win because this forum honestly helped me keep my head up when things got rough. I’m Dominican and my boyfriend is Nigerian, and we met on Hinge when I was living in Atlanta and he was finishing grad school in Houston. At first I wasn’t even looking for anything serious because I was tired of talking to people who ghosted after two good dates. But he was so consistent and actually asked real questions, not just the usual boring stuff.
Long distance was not cute, I’m not gonna lie. Cheap flights, random layovers, time zones, missed birthdays, all of it. But we kept showing up for each other and finally he moved to Atlanta this spring. Last month we had a little dinner with both our families, and my mom, who was nervous at first, ended up tearing up when he thanked her for raising me well. That moment got me good. I guess I’m posting because if you’re in the middle of the hard part, there really can be a happy ending, even if it takes forever.

James T.This is so beautiful. Long distance is brutal and people really don’t get it unless they’ve done it. The fact that you both made it through all that and still feel solid says a lot. Also your mom crying at dinner? I would’ve been a mess too.

James T.Love this for you. I’m in an interracial relationship too and the moving parts can be exhausting, especially when families are in different places and you’re trying to make everyone feel comfortable. Honestly the part about him thanking your mom stood out to me. That kind of respect goes a long way, way more than big gestures sometimes.
