Any good interracial romance novels where the couple actually has chemistry?
I feel like I’ve had bad luck lately with romance books where the premise sounds cute but the actual couple has zero spark. I picked up one from a TikTok rec list last month and made it halfway through on the subway in Philly before giving up because the dialogue felt so stiff. The interracial part was there, but it almost felt like the book was more focused on the setup than the relationship itself.
So now I’m looking for books where the chemistry is obvious from the start, or at least builds in a way that feels believable. I don’t mind slow burn, but I need tension, banter, something. If you’ve got any favorites where you were like, yep, these two belong together, please send them my way. I’m especially into stories where the characters have to work through family stuff or cultural differences without it turning into a lecture.

Emily ChenYou might like Olivia Dade if you haven’t tried her yet. Her couples usually have that natural chemistry where it feels like they actually enjoy being around each other, not just attracted to each other. I read one while staying with my cousin in Houston and kept smiling like an idiot at the kitchen table.
Also, I know everyone says it, but Kennedy Ryan really does write strong romantic tension. Her books can get heavy, but the chemistry is there. The characters feel like they’ve got real history, real baggage, all of it.

James T.Have you read Alyssa Cole? The Loyal League books are more historical, but the romantic tension is so good. I remember reading one in bed after a long shift at a bookstore in Boston and staying up way too late because I needed to know where it was going.
For contemporary, I’d say give Kennedy Ryan and Farrah Rochon a shot. I like when the books show the couple being awkward and funny with each other instead of acting polished all the time. That usually makes the chemistry hit harder for me.
