Any other couples out here bonding over K-pop, anime, and who gets the aux?
My boyfriend and I are kinda hilarious together because we have the most random nerdy overlap. I’m Mexican-American, he’s Nigerian, and we met on Hinge in Dallas after both of us used “likes anime, bad puns, and too much K-pop” in our bios as a joke. The funny part is it wasn’t a joke at all — he actually knew all the words to some BTS songs, and I was shocked because he looked like the type who only listened to afrobeats and old school hip-hop.
Now we’re always fighting over the aux in the car, but in a cute way. He’ll play ATEEZ, I’ll throw on Twice, then he’ll randomly put on the Naruto soundtrack while we’re getting boba in Richardson like that’s normal. We’re trying to go to a Stray Kids concert later this year and I’m already bracing for the chaos. Anyone else have a relationship that started with one shared fandom and somehow turned into sharing a whole music taste?

Jordan B.BASICThis is exactly my kind of relationship lol. I’m Latina and my fiancé is South African, and we met at a local anime meetup in Oakland. It started with talking about Jujutsu Kaisen and ended with us making playlists for each other and arguing about which K-pop group has the best choreo.
The aux struggle is real though. We ended up making a shared playlist called “no skips except when he acts up” and it saved our sanity on road trips. If you’re going to the Stray Kids concert, definitely plan the outfit early because last-minute concert fits always end up being way more stressful than they should be.

Andre M.PREMIUMOmg yes, shared fandoms can turn into everything. I’m Vietnamese and my husband is Black, and we met at a K-pop dance cover event in Houston. I used to think we’d only have that one thing in common, but now we’re watching anime together, gaming on weekends, and even planning a trip to Seoul next spring because he wants the full experience.
My advice: don’t worry if your tastes don’t match 100% all the time. It’s actually kind of fun having separate favorites and then introducing each other to stuff. He got me into older hip-hop, I got him into Studio Ghibli, and now our apartment is just a weird mix of posters, lightsticks, and game controllers everywhere.
