From a random coffee line to planning our wedding, still feels unreal

I never thought I’d be posting in here, but honestly I’m still kind of buzzing. We met last fall at this tiny coffee shop in Chicago when the line was wrapped around the corner and both of us were complaining about the wait. He was behind me making jokes about how the barista was moving at glacier speed, and I laughed way too hard. We ended up talking for like 20 minutes before either of us got our drinks. I’m Black and he’s Korean-American, and weirdly enough the whole thing felt easy from the jump, like we’d known each other longer than an hour. We started hanging out after that, mostly little things at first, walking by the lake, grabbing food in Hyde Park, texting memes all day. Fast forward to now and we just got engaged last weekend. It still feels kind of crazy saying that out loud. We’ve had the usual awkward moments too, mostly with family questions and people being nosey, but overall it’s been better than I ever expected. Just wanted to share because I used to read these posts and think maybe that kind of love was for other people, not me.

Congrats!! That’s such a sweet story. The coffee line meeting is giving rom-com but in a real way, lol. I love that it started with something so normal and just turned into something bigger. Chicago seems to have a way of making people cross paths like that.

Awww this made me smile. We’re also a Black/Asian couple and the family questions were the hardest part at first, especially from older relatives who didn’t know what to make of it. What helped us was just staying consistent and not acting like we had to explain the whole relationship to everybody. Congrats on the engagement, that’s huge!
