looking for bwwm romances that don't feel corny
Okay, I need help because I keep starting BWWM books and bailing halfway through when the dialogue gets too corny or everything feels overly scripted. I’m not even trying to be mean, I just want something that feels like actual adults talking. I’m in Dallas and I read a lot on the train to work, so I usually want something I can get into fast without rolling my eyes every other page.
The last one I finished was set in New Orleans and the setting was honestly my favorite part. The romance was fine, but I liked the way the author wrote the city and the side characters more than the couple, which probably says a lot. Any recommendations for authors who write strong women and believable interracial relationships? I’m open to slow burn, messy, funny, whatever, as long as it doesn’t read like a Hallmark script.

Brittany S.BASICYou might like books that lean more contemporary literary than pure romance. I know that sounds annoying, but some of the BWWM books in that lane do a better job with dialogue and character work. I’m in Oakland and I’ve found a few that way through library apps and just reading random reviews on Goodreads, which is kinda old school but still helpful.
Also, if you hate corny dialogue, avoid anything with too many exaggerated pet names right away lol. That usually tells me I’m not gonna make it past chapter 3.

Priya PatelPREMIUMI’m with you. I can handle spice, but I need the people to talk like people. I read one from a Black woman author in Baltimore where the couple started off kind of awkward and annoyed with each other, and that made it so much better because it felt like real chemistry building instead of instant perfection.
Maybe try searching for books with tropes like enemies to lovers or slow burn and then skim a couple sample pages before buying. That’s saved me from so many disappointments, especially on Kindle Unlimited.
