Met my gf through a Genshin co-op and now we’re planning a cosplay con trip lol
So this is kinda wild, but I met my girlfriend on a Genshin Impact co-op random in late 2023. I’m Black, she’s Filipina, and we both lived like 20 minutes apart in Chicago without even realizing it. We started out just farming bosses and helping each other with stupid artifact runs, then it turned into Discord calls that were supposed to be “just for resin” and ended up being like 3 hours long.
Fast forward a year and now we’re the annoying couple that argues over who has the better taste in anime openings and whether the Nintendo Switch is worth bringing on every trip. We’re going to Anime Expo in LA this summer and trying to coordinate a couples cosplay, but we keep changing our minds because we both want to do something nerdy but not too complicated. Anyone else meet their person through gaming first? I feel like it made us really comfortable before we even met in real life, but I’m curious how other people handled the jump from online to actual dating.

Mike HernandezThat’s honestly so cute. Me and my husband met on Discord too, through a Fire Emblem server, and I swear gaming friendship is the best foundation because you already know how the other person handles teamwork and losing badly lol. We’re in an interracial relationship too, I’m Dominican and he’s Korean American, and anime conventions became like our thing once we started dating.
For cosplay, my advice is pick something with a color palette you both like and not too many props. We did Jolyne and Foo Fighters one year and it looked amazing in pics, but I almost passed out carrying the wig and accessories around San Jose Comic Con. Keep it fun, not stressful.

Chris TanakaI love this. Honestly the jump from online to real life is always a little awkward at first, but if y’all already had those long Discord calls then you basically did the hard part already. I’m Indian and my boyfriend is white, we met playing Overwatch in Atlanta and ended up bonding over anime soundtracks and dumb YouTube rabbit holes.
For the con trip, maybe do a soft cosplay first instead of a full-on super detailed one. Like matching shirts, themed accessories, or characters from the same series but not super armor-heavy. That way you still get the couple vibe without spending 6 hours getting ready in a hotel bathroom.
