Trying to find a photographer in Atlanta who actually gets mixed skin tones
Hey y’all, me and my fiancé are planning our engagement pics for late October and I’m kind of stressed about finding the right photographer. I’m Black and he’s white, and we had one bad experience already with a mini session where my skin looked way too dark and his face was super washed out. It was honestly disappointing because I was so excited and then I saw the proofs and just felt kinda meh about the whole thing.
We’re in Atlanta, so you’d think it wouldn’t be hard, but a lot of portfolios I’ve looked at are either mostly one type of couple or the lighting just doesn’t seem balanced. I want somebody who understands how to shoot different skin tones without making it look awkward or over-edited. If anyone has recommendations for photographers around ATL or even just things to ask before booking, please send them my way.
Also, has anyone done a shoot in Piedmont Park or around the BeltLine and had good results? We’re trying to keep it natural and fun, not super posed. I just really want us to look like us, not some weird filtered version.

Priya PatelPREMIUMGirl yes, I feel this so much. We had our engagement shoot in Charlotte last year and I literally asked the photographer straight up if they had experience with Black and white couples. Some people get weird about it, but the good ones won’t mind at all. We ended up loving our pics because she showed us full galleries, not just Instagram highlights, and that made a huge difference.

Tasha WilliamsCheck out photographers who shoot weddings at HBCUs or multicultural weddings, that was the best tip I got from my cousin. A lot of them already know how to handle different skin tones and won’t just rely on one lighting setup for everybody. We did ours in Houston at a little park near Montrose and the photographer kept adjusting the exposure the whole time, which I appreciated so much.

Lisa NakamuraPREMIUMOne thing that helped us was bringing inspiration pics and being super honest about what we didn’t want. We said no harsh flash, no making my husband look gray, and no orange editing on my skin lol. She laughed but she also took notes. If you’re booking in ATL, ask for a test shot or a couple raws if they allow it — that saved us from wasting money on somebody who didn’t get it.
